Wren at the Zoo

Wren and the Chimps 2, originally uploaded by chase+kate.

I haven't mentioned it before, but Lazlo and I got a family pass to the LA Zoo from my Aunt Franny this year, and we've been going probably every other weekend at least. I thought the zoo might make me sad, but most of the animals have pretty nice habitats. This one poor jaguar though... just pacing back and forth in this tiny rectangle. That was pretty disheartening.

But like I was saying, the orangatans have an awesome space, and the chimps in this picture, if you get there at the right time, will be right up against the glass, interacting with visitors (interacting in this sense means mostly spraying urine and feces, with a side of vicious hooting, but still...).

There's also a petting zoo, that maybe should advertise itself a little more clearly as a GOAT petting zoo, since that's the only animal available for actual petting. And there are lions and bears, and tons of seals and sea lions. It's a really cool place, which is unfortunately also full of really terrible smells.

That's all I have today- the zoo = awesome.

Also, we're still doing the cloth diapers with Wrennel, and now that she's getting bigger, and seems sort of interested in diaper changes, and their relationship with the big girl potty... does anyone know of cloth pull-ups? Or if there's some sort of next step for cloth diapers? Or do I just need to switch finally to regular diapers? Thanks for the help.

i think the alternative to pull-ups is drop-hatch.

I think that cloth pullups are usually known in English as big girl underpants.

You can get them that are a bit thicker in the middle to absorb the inevitable leakage between the moment the child recognizes that she needs to go to the potty and actually arriving at the potty and correctly positioning herself. But they will not actually absorb an entire toddler bladderful. Which means you have to be serious about them before you switch. Because there will be no going back, at least in most kids' minds.

As the weather warms up, I recommend this as a good phase to spend a lot of time outside, in a place where they/you won't mind toddler bare bottoms. I found that one of my kids was much more careful when he knew he wasn't wearing any underpants.

YMMV, as always.

How have you liked the cloth diaper experience? I'm wanting to try them with our first, but have gotten all these negative comments about them from friends and relatives, accompanied by eye-rolling.

Since Baby hasn't responded yet, I'll throw in my two cents:

I really like the cloth diapers, and they're not the hassle everybody assumes them to be -- as long as you have either a diaper service or a washing machine.

We had a diaper service at first (which was nice) but once we got a washer and dryer we cancelled the service, and it hasn't been bad at all. There are a few tricks to washing the diapers (like, you have soak them with a little bit of bleach or oxyclean before you wash them with detergent), but they're not bad at all. I feel a lot better putting Wren in cloth diapers than paper.
